Knights of Columbus Council 4727 Issue Number 2107
July 2001
Grand
Knight’s Report
By
George Coseo
Brothers,
As you are reading this we have embarked on a new fraternal year in out order, 2001-2002. I feel privileged and honored to have been elected as the Council’s Grand Knight. Your newly elected officers and myself are enthusiastically looking forward to furthering the order’s programs and activities.
The Council is still frustrated in its efforts to move forward with the new council hall. It was Pat Bianco’s highest hope that somehow our new hall would be attained during his tenure, if not completed at least started. Regrettably it was not to be. Our efforts to get city officials to consider our requested zoning variance for our originally intended location as well as our search for other suitable locations for the hall have not been fruitful. The efforts will continue, no one has given up, and we will have a new hall. We just cannot say when.
But a building is not the Knights of Columbus. It is only a place to conduct business and activities. The council members, you and I, are the Knights of Columbus. It is what we do that makes our council successful. According to the latest membership report from our Supreme Council our membership stands at 370 members, 231 associate members, 112 insurance members and 27 members classified as inactive. At our June 12th business meeting there were 47 Brothers present. This was a pretty good turnout but it seems to me with our membership it should and could be better. WHERE ARE YOU BROTHERS?? We need you. We need you talents, ideas and suggestions, and most of all your participation in your council’s programs and activities. Step forward and get involved.
Vacation
season is upon us. Many of you will be heading out with your families to
your favorite vacation spot or perhaps a new one. Stay safe and enjoy.
And if you are driving please remember: “DON’T DRIVE FASTER THAN YOUR GUARDIAN
ANGEL CAN FLY.” See you at our next meeting
God Bless,
George

Dear K-Cees,
Just a few reminders. At our last meeting, we set the date for our Membership Tea. Please mark your calendars for August 26th, 2001, at 2:00pm. Dolores Bianco graciously offered to hold this affair at her home. Hope you can attend and bring a guest. At that time we will have our Installation of Officers for the coming year:
Wanda Martin, President

RETRACTION: I have included an error in my column. I previously reported that the requirements to hold an officer’s position is to be a First Degree Knight in good standing. That is wrong. In order to hold an officer’s position you must be a THIRD DEGREE KNIGHT in good standing. I apologize for the misinformation. Last month we reviewed the positions of Recorder, Financial Secretary and Treasurer. This month we will look at three more. It is my hope that you will be motivated to take a more active part in YOUR council. If you have any questions please email them to me at bellsr@mediaone.net and I will respond to them in a later issue.
The Lecturer. The Lecturer is appointed by the Grand Knight to provide suitable educational and entertaining programs for the council. He is responsible for the “Good of the Order” section at council meetings. Two of our regularly occurring activities under the Good of the Order are our 50/50 drawing and our attendance drawing (you do have to be present to win). The lecturer must be knowledgeable of all aspects of council programming in order to provide members with informative and entertaining programs. Two primary goals for the lecturer are to build meeting attendance and provide benefits to the members present.
Advocate: The Advocate is elected annually and is the legal representative of the council. He should serve as the council’s attorney in case of trial and investigation of any matter of interest to the council (they didn’’t tell me that when the asked me to run). He should be familiar with all of the laws of the order and with the council by-laws. When a by-law is to be revised the advocate serves as the chairman of the revision committee. The advocate should also have a working knowledge of “Robert’s Rules of Order,” and the Supreme Council Flyer “Methods of Conducting a Council Meeting”. An understanding of both of these will help keep meetings on track.
Warden: The Warden is elected annually and is responsible for supervising and maintaining most council property, except which belongs to the financial secretary. He sets up the council chambers for meetings and degrees and appoints and supervises guards for ceremonial exemplifications. The warden should also oversee the inside and outside guards and make sure that they are fulfilling the duties assigned to them.
The basic requirement to hold any of these positions is that you be at least a Third Degree Knight in good standing. Each brother Knight considering a position must be willing to commit to three meetings per month. It is not required but it is encouraged that a brother Knight works his way up through some of the other positions first. This helps him to become more familiar with the operations of our council.
Oh, by the way, in case you missed the last meeting, we had elections and have a new group of victims… Oh sorry I mean some outstanding civic-minded leaders who will help us to take our council to new heights. All kidding aside, the new group of officers have some great ideas and are eager to put them into action. Please help out if you are called upon to assist YOUR council. Better yet, don’t wait, step forward and be an active part of your council.

FROM THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY
Some big changes are in order for Council 4727. We are part of an experiment to change our membership accounting system from the calendar year to the fiscal year. Our dues year will now be from July 1 to June 30, and not from January 1 to December 31. These changes are starting now. Everyone who has a membership card showing an expiration date of December 31,2001 will keep it and use it. In January of 2002 you will be billed for $24.00, which will pay your dues until June 30, 2002. Then in July you will be billed for the entire fiscal year July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003. Those of you who are paid up until June 30, 2001 will be billed for the entire fiscal year in June of this Year. This change puts us in the same cycle as our elected officers, that is, July through June. Many other Councils nationwide are also changing to this new system and our State Deputy, D. J. Stoddard, has volunteered us for this project. Your cooperation will be appreciated. I will be mailing the final dues notices for this year. These are the Notices of Intent to Suspend. It is necessary that this be done in that the Council can no longer pay the State and Supreme per capita charges for those who do not pay their dues. --If you have paid your dues and I send you a notice, call me at 743-2109. If you receive a notice and have not paid your dues because of some special circumstances, please call our Grand Knight, George Coseo at 724-9585. All of our members are special and we would like for everyone to remain a member of Council 4727.

BLESS, DON

A coalition of 60 pro abortion groups has filed a petition with the U. S. Food & Drug Adm., asking that the morning after abortion pill be made available over the counter. The FDA has 180 days to respond. What can we do, we are urged to write the FDA and comment. The message is a simple one: Don't do it! In fact the FDA should be told to withdraw the pill because they do not prevent abortion; they are abortion.

THE SORROWFUL MYSTERIES
(1) The Agony in the Garden: Let us pray for mothers and fathers who are in agony because they are tempted to abort a child. May they be given the good news that there are alternatives, and may they make use of the help that is available.
(2) The Scourging: As Christ's flesh was torn by the instruments of those who scourged Him, so the bodies of babies in the womb are torn by the instruments of the abortionists. Let us pray that abortionists may repent of these acts of child-killing.
(3) The Crowning With Thorns: Jesus suffered the pain of thorns in His head, and did so silently. We pray for the mothers and fathers of aborted children. So many of them suffer deep grief and regret over a choice that can never reversed. So many suffer in silence, because others tell them it's no big deal.
(4) The Carrying of the Cross: Jesus was not condemned by the power of wicked people. He was condemned because of the silence of good people. Silence always helps the oppressor, never the victim. Let us pray that we may never be silent about abortion, but rather will clearly speak up to save babies from death.
(5) The Crucifixion: As we ponder the death of Christ, let us remember the many women who have died from so called "safe, legal" abortions. Let us ask forgiveness and mercy for them. May their memory save other women from making this tragic mistake.

The Man of the Year
If there was a man of the year award for the Knights of Columbus there would be no question who the recipient would be:
Jim “Bonnie” Bonitatibus
No one gives more unselfishly of his time regardless of the time of day or night. As a True Knight, when he is needed “He is There”. Most of the time it’s not a pleasant circumstance that needs his services, yet he never fails to step up under adverse conditions and do a stellar job.
During the year he talks to us about subjects we don’t want to hear-yet he doesn’t get discouraged. He knows what is best for us and in the time of need we know that he is right. Behind the scenes he feverishly does his job beyond what any of us can imagine. He puts the puzzle together when a Knights family has a loss regardless of whether they have K of C insurance or not. He never fails to step up and fight for us if there are questionable policies. He never fails to see that our loved ones get everything they have coming to them from Social Security, Armed Forces, etc. etc..
The more I am around Jim and know him the more amazed I become of what he does for us and for his fellow man.
Jim Bonnie is truly a Knight in Shining Armour. Thank you for being a part of all of us.
