Grand Knight’s Report
By George Coseo

Brothers,

GOOD NEWS!  Thanks to the diligence of our ACA officers and directors a building has been located that may soon be our new council hall.  It's been a long haul.  Plan to attend the special ACA meeting on Feb. 12th and get all of the details.

Through the efforts of Mike Yarborough, on Saturday January 19th, we kicked off our council's participation in the "Adopt a Highway Program."  We have been assigned a section of Lone Star Road from Townsend Blvd. west to where the road forks at the funeral home.  There are signs at both ends of the section identifying our participation.  A number of Knights and families labored for about an hour picking up the litter and other trash along both sides of the road.  Thanks to all for turning out for this project.  The area looked great when you finished.  This will be an ongoing monthly project.

We will be conducting our annual "Tootsie Roll Drive” to benefit the handicapped on Friday and Saturday February 22nd and 23rd.  This is one of the most important charity drives of the year.  Last years drive was very successful but could have been even better if we had mustered enough volunteers to man one more facility.  I urge everyone to commit to this event.  Sign up for a time slot at one of the locations.  That's where the action is. The success of this project depends on the efforts of all of our members.

I would like to extend a special thanks to Mike Yarborough and Jim Middleton for constructing some 45 wooden crosses for Christ the King School.  The children will place these crosses on the church grounds as part of the Right to Life Program.  Our Knights in action.  Thanks guys!

Please do not forget our K of C Charities. If you haven't as yet sent in your annual donation please do so if you can. The annual K of C Charities banquet "Sharin" O' The Green" is scheduled for Saturday March 9th at the Radisson Riverwalk Hotel.

A Third Degree Exemplification will be held February 16th at St. John's River Council 10850.  All Second Degree members should avail themselves of this opportunity to become a Third Degree Knight.  There probably will not be another Third Degree in this area for several months.

The Council is on the move.  Be a part of it.

Peace to all.

George

Chaplains Message
by Monsignor Danaher

Brothers and Sisters:

   Greetings with love and happy Valentine's Day.

We are about to start the winter Olympics. St. Paul long ago wrote to the Corinthians in his first letter  “You know that while all the runners in the stadium take part in the race the award goes to one person. In that case run so as to win”. St.Paul continues, “Athletes deny themselves all sorts of things. They do this to win a crown of leaves that withers, but we can win a crown that is imperishable.”

The season of Lent starts on February 13th. All of us are in the Race to eternal glory. Like the athletes who deny themselves so much we too must do the same on the spiritual journey.

 Love and Peace,

Msgr. Mortimer Danaher

FROM THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY

Dues have been coming in very well. So far, over 120 of our members have paid either until June 30, 2002 or to December 31, 2002. Thanks to you, our financial condition is quite good. Now is the time to renew your Newsletter Sponsorship or to become a Newsletter Sponsor. The cost is $10.00 per person, which is $20.00 for a couple. It costs about $160.00 per month to mail the Newsletter, so every little bit can help. For your information, we mail out about 425 Newsletters each month.

ACA News February

It is my hope that by the time you read this we will have closed on our NEW HALL. If all inspections prove satisfactory, WDO, EPA, Survey and general inspection then we should be meeting there in March.

The good and the bad, more square feet then the old building, less land and less parking, except we have the permission to park in the office complex that shares the area. The same for the tire station, “Bivin’s Tire”, when they are not open we can use all of his property. If you have occasion to use his services let them know who you are for a great discount. If we remain good neighbors then I see no problem; let us all do our part. Our new address is: 6030 Arlington Expressway - check it out. The first meeting in February will be a SPECIAL MEETING to discuss the purchase of the new building and any issues concerning the new hall location.

2002 Tootsie Roll Drive

The Tootsie Roll Drive for 2002 will be held February 22nd and 23rd.  This event collects money for mentally handicapped citizens in Jacksonville.  Brother Knights are posted outside locations such as Publix or Winn Dixie and “give away” tootsie rolls.  Donations are collected and distributed to several needy organizations such as Cerebral Palsy, Harbor House, Handicapped Girl Scouts and Challenger (Handicapped) Little League Baseball. We like to have members participate in a two-hour shift on either Friday afternoon or any time Saturday.  The more members helping reduce the chance that others will have to work more than one shift.  Money counters and runners are also needed.  We will be making calls to recruit help for this worthwhile event.  Please reserve some time on either Friday afternoon or Saturday to help.

Thanks,

Gerry Kistka and Tom Heusinger

Road Cleanup Successful

Our first cleanup of Lone Star Road on January 19th was a tremendous success.  Our group of volunteers bagged up 9 bags of trash and debris on Lone Star between Townsend Boulevard and Lillian Road.  My thanks to Joann Crow of the City of Jacksonville Adopt - a - Road Program for meeting us Saturday morning and providing us with vests, bags, and gloves to aid us in the cleanup.  She also presented our council with a framed certificate that will be proudly displayed in our new hall. And a BIG THANK YOU to all our volunteers: Steve, Maryellen, Angela, Michael, and David Bell, Troupe and Larry Turner, Grand Knight George Coseo, Jim Middleton, Jesse Morgan, Mike Capizzi and his grandson Matthew Masters, Ralph Mosely and his grandson Matthew Morris, and myself and my sons Bobby and David Yarborough. Our next cleanup will be in Early March.

RIGHT TO LIFE

WHEN DOES LIFE BEGIN?

For years pro-lifers have been saying that life begins at conception/fertilization to be exact, while the media and pro-aborts keep accusing us of having a "love affair" with the fetus. But God uses it all for His greater good. The recent media frenzy on Embryonic Stem Cell Research, has forced the world to focus on the fact that life actually begins at conception/fertilization.

This has been most interesting as you study the results of a WorldNet poll that was conducted on Saturday August 11th, 2001. It would have been interesting also if the same survey was conducted a year ago. Our God is truly in control! The question asked:

When does life begin?  The response may surprise you.

           *      At Conception...........................................…..….    86.9%

           *      When viable outside the mother's womb....………..    4.1%

           *      Not until the moment of birth....................…….…..    3.2%

           *      During the second trimester....................….....…..   1.7%

           *      Not sure........................................................…..    1.6%

           *      Other .............................................................….   1.5%

           *      During third trimester...............................….....….   0.5%

           *      No opinion......................................................….    0.2%

          Total surveyed: 2,357 persons.

COMMENT: More reason why we can’t abandon the fight. People need to know the truth. If we can expose the truth, most people will do the right thing. "Better to light one candle than to curse the darkness".
