Grand Knight’s Report
By George Coseo

Brothers,

January ended sadly as we bid farewell to our faithful brother Sir Knight Charles A. "Al" Williams.  Al was truly a Knight of Charity.  Always there when needed.  Many will miss him, no one will forget him.  God Bless Al, Rest in Peace.

Once again February is our "Tootsie Roll" month as we conduct our annual drive to raise funds to benefit our handicapped citizens.  Gerry Kistka and Tom Heusinger  are co-chairing the drive.  Please sign up for a 2-hour or more slot at one of the locations where donations will be collected or assist in any other way you can.  Last year we collected a little over $5900.  With everyone's commitment to this endeavor we can exceed this amount this year.  Our success depends on you.

Please remember K C Charities.  Donations have been slow.  We have a council membership of around 360 members and to date have received donations from slightly over 10% of the membership.  Please remit your donation as quickly as possible.  This year the K C Charities annual ball "Sharin O' the Green" will be held on April 5th at the Holiday Inn Baymeadows.  Ticket prices will be $75 per couple, 40$ single.  Reserve your tickets now. I will have some as soon as they are printed.

In closing remember: No one passes this way more than once.  Whatever good you can do, do it now!

Peace to all.

George

Chaplains Message
by Monsignor Danaher

Dear Brothers and Sisters

Greetings with love!

The Holy Father has asked us to say our rosary every day for world peace and world hunger. We have 15 mysteries for several hundred years to meditate on while we are saying the prayers. Last October the Holy Father added 5 new mysteries and he called them the Luminous mysteries. They are: The Baptism in the Jordan, The miracle at the wedding at Cana, Christ's Proclamation of the Kingdom of God and call to Conversion, The Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist. We know the family that Prays together will stay together.

Love and Peace,

Msgr. Mortimer Danaher

Right to Life
by Jim Middleton

We just commemorated the 30th anniversary of the infamous Roe vs. Wade decision of the United States Supreme Court with a prayerful Stand for Life at the Federal Court-house in downtown Jacksonville. The Knights were well represented. Many thanks to those Knights and their families that participated.

Now consider this, from Peter Paul Ministries (an excerpt) NOT ENOUGH BABIES.   The New York Times and ABC's Nightline, two of the United States' leading mouthpieces for the "Culture of Death", have finally acknowledged what most demographers have been saying for more than a decade: The countries of Europe and North America that have embraced abortion and contraception as a way of life are demographically dead. The problem is falling numbers of people. Forget the population explosion; it is the population implosion that we must start to worry about.  In Italy the fertility rate is the lowest in the world and has now fallen to 1.1 children per woman. It is not much higher in Spain, Germany Sweden, France or Britain. Even in countries like Canada and America the fertility rate is now below the threshold of 2.1 children per woman necessary to keep the population stable. This means that without immigration, the population of those countries will fall. The number of countries with such below replacement fertility is growing all the time.  Birth Rates: (A birth rate of 2.1 means that , without immigration, the population of those countries will decline!) Italy-1.1, Spain-1.2, Greece-1.3, Austria-1.4, Germany-1.5, Denmark-1.6, France-1.7, Britain-1.7, Ireland-1.8, Australia-1.8, Canada-1.8, USA-2.1, Brazil-2.5, Mexico-2.7, Philippines-3.6, Egypt-3.8, Iran-5.9, Saudi Arabia-6.2, Nigeria-6.3.

Dues have been coming in at a good pace. However we will be mailing out the second dues notices on or about February the 1st.  Our annual dues support the council and allow us to do the many works of charity we do on a regular basis. One of our finest charities is the support we send our seminarians monthly. Our support of seminarians was recognized in a Papal Blessing received from Pope John Paul II. It is on display in our new hall.

Regarding the payment of dues, The Knights of Columbus is first and foremost a charitable organization.  We realize that there may be good reasons why you are unable to pay your dues at this time. In cases such as this, our Grand Knight is able to waive the payment of dues. Just give him a call. G.K. George Coseo may be reached at 724-9585. Our charity begins at home.

Thanks for your attention and cooperation,

Don

2003 Tootsie Roll Drive

The annual Tootsie Roll Drive will be conducted on Friday and Saturday, February 21st and 22nd.  We will again be using four to five locations; Publix stores on Merrill Rd. and Atlantic Blvd. The Winn Dixie stores on University and Ft. Caroline Rd. and possibly one other location.  We will also be collecting after the masses on Sunday the 23rd at Resurrection and Christ the King.  Donations are collected and distributed to several needy organizations such as Cerebral Palsy, Harbor House, Handicapped Girl Scouts and Challenger (Handicapped) Little League Baseball. We like to have members participate in a two-hour shift on either Friday afternoon or any time Saturday.  The more members helping reduce the chance that others will have to work more than one shift.  Money counters and runners are also needed.  We will be making calls to recruit help for this worthwhile event.  Please reserve some time on either Friday afternoon or Saturday to help.

 Thanks,

Gerry Kistka 396-9897 and

Tom Heusinger 641-6537

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE

Dear Brother Knights as the Membership Chairmen I am tasked with the responsibility to come up with activities that will increase the membership of our council.  New blood in our council is essential to keep it vibrant and alive with new ideas and talents for the promotion of our order and furthering the mission of Father Michael J. McGivney.  Without new membership, our council could grow stale and stagnant and whither on the vine to die.  If you have any ideas on how to promote membership in our order please contact me so we can discuss it at the next council meeting.  Also I am always looking for Brother Knights to become active Recruiters that can assist me in planning activities and contacting prospects for upcoming exemplifications. If you have any ideas for membership drives or wish to become an active Recruiter on my team please contact me, Gregg Bell #551-0156 or email aqua-holics@attbi.com.

Thank you and may God Bless America.
