Grand Knight’s Report
By George Coseo

Brothers All,

Spring is here.  Our new council home is a reality - A new beginning.  Regrettably, I was unable to preside over the first council meeting in our new hall.  I understand that there were around 42 brothers at this meeting.  That's great!  I pray that meeting attendance keeps growing.  The final tally of the Tootsie Roll Fundraiser was $5,903.74.  GREAT JOB!!  This amount surpassed last year's record donations.  Many thanks to all who participated.

On Saturday, April 20th, Christ The King School is hosting a Spring Carnival.  Our council members will

Man the cooking booth preparing hotdogs, hamburgers, etc.  Join your brother knights in making this event a success.

From the Internet an interesting bit of a child's wisdom:

A little girl was sitting on her Grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story.  From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek.  She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again.  Finally she spoke up. "Grandpa, did God make you?" "Yes sweetheart", he answered, "God made me a long time ago."  "Oh," she paused, "Grandpa did God make me too?"  "Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a while ago."

Feeling their respective faces again she observed,

"God's getting better at it, isn't he."

God Bless,

George

Chaplains Message
by Monsignor Danaher

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings with love!

During the four Sundays in April we rejoice with Our Lord and thank Him for showing us the way to heaven. We thank Him for Our Church and all that it means to us. We have the mass which is the greatest prayer we have.

This is a time of renewal for us individually and quiet time is important. Where am I in my faith Journey? As I grow older does Jesus become more important in My Life?

Love and Peace,

Msgr. Mortimer Danaher

4727 “SUPER 100 FOR CATHOLIC EDUCATION”

Dear Brothers,

We are continuing our 4727 Super 100 drive for catholic education this year. Our Goal is $2000 per year for 5 years. So far we stand at $500 for the first year. The following brother knights who have contributed to the fund: Bill Garrett, Larry Turner, Troupe Turner, Louie O'Neal, George Morris, Mike Yarborough, Al Williams, Fred Wheeler, Bob Knutson, Charles Strauss, Don Thompson, Dick Hulcher, Gino Rocca, George Coseo, Tam Bennett, Frank Becht, Pat Bianco, George Rodriques, Brian Harrington, Lance Simons, Jessie Morgan, Steve Bell, and Russell Matzen.  A contribution was also received from Harriet Hughes, whose father was a Knight of Columbus. Many thanks to all of the above for their generosity.  Won't you join them? $20.00 a year is all that is needed to get the first year under your belt.  Please consider helping to provide catholic education to those less fortunate, but who truly are deserving of the gift. Thanks

Second notices of dues were sent out recently. Response has been pretty good. Dues are important to our Council, but our members are more important. If there is some good reason why payment cannot be made at this time, call Grand Knight George Coseo (724-9585), or Deputy Grand Knight Mike Yarborough (724-8983), or me (743-2109). ACA News April

We now have a Home, 6030 Arlington Expressway, Tel # (904) 723-3810.  Lots of work to do, some of it has started by a few members.  Jim Middleton and Gino Rocca and others have been working on the kitchen and have thoughts about other parts of the hall.  Call Jim if you are good with a hammer, saw etc.  The roof is clean, now we need to work on the grounds.  Call Larry Turner if you can help.  Larry has put in a good bit of his time and his equipment, thanks Larry.  We can use some of the younger guy's for that yard work.  Larry can give you the code to get in the gate.  A friend of Troupe Turner donated two small refrigerators, it helps to know people.  We need to add a stove, preferably gas, anybody have a connection?  The carpet needs replacing; do we go with tile or vinyl?  Do we have a member in that business?  Now the building needs identification, wish we had our sign from the old building, but we do have a member with connections.  Keep in mind when we have meeting or other affairs we have reserve two spaces in front of the office complex for their use.  Our next workday will be Saturday April 13th after the road clean up detail, mark your calendar.  This will allow time to discuss our plans at the first business meeting and muster up manpower and expertise.   Please help when you can.

U.S. Bishops Mount New Pro-Life Campaigns with Help from Knights

Pro-life leaders say Knights support since 1990 has been critical in shifting public opinion toward the pro-life position

The Secretariat for Pro-Life Activities of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has launched a new radio and subway advertising campaign with the message: “Abortion: Have We Gone Too Far?”

The campaign, called the “Second Look Project,” is supported through an annual grant from the Knights of Columbus, which since 1990 has provided more than $10 million to the public information programs of the pro-life secretariat.

The Order's Board of Directors also has renewed a grant to the USCCB's Diocesan Development Program for Natural Family Planning (NFP), which has slated some new initiatives for this year, including an information campaign named for the late Bishop James T. McHugh, a pioneer in the field and a member of Coronation Council 1863 in Fort Lee, N.J., at the time of his death in December 2000.  The Order has given just over $3 million in grants for NFP programs since 1983.

“We at the Bishops' conference consider the Knight of Columbus our hero in the pro-life movement,” said Cathleen Cleaver, director of planning and information for the pro-life secretariat.  Over the past 14 months, she has headed the “Second Look Project.”

She said that when she took her position in November 2000, she studied public opinion polls over the years and noted a significant shift among Americans toward the pro-life position.  About 35 percent in the early-to mid 1990s described themselves as pro-life as compared to about 46 percent today.

“That's a dramatic change.  We seem to be winning the culture on life issues,” she stated.  “I can say this is in large part because of the work and support of the Knights of Columbus.”

The bishops' campaign against partial-birth abortion was a major factor I turning around opinion on abortion in general, she claimed.  It got people to think about the radical nature of abortion and wonder if it should be allowed up to the time of birth.

“We did lots of advertising, testifying before Congress and other legislative bodies and a host of other activities mainly through the support of the Knights,” Cleaver said.

Gail Quinn, who has worked for the pro-life secretariat for more than 30 years and is now executive director, called the support of the Knights indispensable to the work of the bishops.  She is working on disseminating information on the bishops' new pastoral plan for pr-life activities and meeting with diocesan respect life directors and heads of major Catholic organizations to get it implemented locally and nationwide.  The pastoral plan, “A Campaign in Support of Life,” was adopted at the USCCB's November meeting.

Her office also is supporting three new NFP initiatives.  Among them is developing posters, parish mailings and other publicity materials for National Natural Family Planning Weekend, July 21-22.  The weekend is designed to call attention at diocesan and parish levels to the effectiveness of NFP in postponing or facilitating conception.

RIGHT TO LIFE

MASTER CELL FOUND IN ADULT BONE MARROW!!

(There is an alternative to Embryonic Stem Cells)

The argument that only human embryos possessed stem cells that were sufficiently "versatile" or "malleable" or "plastic" to potentially be capable of becoming any tissue in the human body has been a powerful weapon in the arsenal of those who wanted federal funding (and the respectability that comes from tapping in to the federal spigot) to underwrite research that required the destruction of human embryos.  However, Dr. Catherine M. Verfaillie and her colleagues at the University of Minnesota's Stem Cell Institute have discovered a type of adult stem cell found in bone marrow that holds out the possibility of growing into any kind of tissue in the body.  Dubbed "multipotent adult progenitor cells" (MPACs), the adult stem cells isolated by Dr. Verfaillie's team appear to offer the best of all possible worlds. They seem to possess all of the advantages attributed to embryonic cells but avoid the two major drawbacks researchers have encountered with stem cells: (1) Coming from the patient's own body, the immune system would not attack the tissue as foreign invaders; and (2) the MPACs don't turn cancerous!  These findings are likely to shake up the national debate over stem cell research!

Mark one up for the good guys!!
