Grand Knight’s Report

Brothers,

 

It doesn't seem possible that this is my 23rd "Grand Knight's Report" for the Knightly News.

In a few short months a new Grand Knight will be in charge. Twenty-two months ago when I assumed this office I thought a two-year term would be an eternity. Yet, looking back, it seems to have passed in the blink of an eye. Where does time go?

May is an important month. It is the midpoint of the spring season. More importantly, it is the month in which in which we celebrate "Mother's Day". For many of us our mother was, or is, the most influential person in our lives. Some of us have only fond memories of "Mom" which we hold close in our hearts. For those of you who’s Mother is still with you make her day special.

The Children's Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday April 19th was very well attended. Special thanks to Mary Yarborough and Diana Morris and helpers for organizing and coordinating this event. Thanks also to all who attended. It was great to see all of families, children, grandparents and guests enjoying this family event.

Just a reminder, the council is conducting a Second Degree on Tuesday May 13th. If you have sponsored a new member who is ready for his Second Degree please contact him to ensure his attendance at this degree. Candidate call is 7:00 PM. See you there.

Chaplains Message

Dear Brothers and Sisters Greetings with love!:

 

During this month we celebrate the Season after Easter. It last for seven weeks. We rejoice with Jesus and our Church for this season. We have a chance to meditate on the Empty Tomb and our own hope of Eternal life. We must go to Heaven and we must work with our minds, hearts and souls to get there. The Pope recently wrote “If the Rosary keeps pace with the speed of our lives, it can become a privileged instrument for building peace in the hearts of persons, in families and among peoples” .The family that prays together stays together. That is what we badly need in our daily lives.

Right to Life

ABORTION DENIES OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS

 

The Declaration of Independence states that all people are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, among them life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness." Thus, abortion denies a child the most basic God-given rights. Here are some of the ways that abortion denies innocent babies their constitutional rights:

THE 6TH AMENDMENT in essence states "the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy public trial, to be confronted with the witnesses against him, to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor." Abortion imposes the penalty for a capital crime upon an innocent baby without charge & without the protections this amendment affords.

THE 8TH AMENDMENT guarantees protection against "cruel & unusual punishments." First, the child is not guilty of anything worthy of punishment. Second, the unwarranted punishment of abortion is, by its nature "cruel and unusual." Nowhere in America is the death penalty imposed by dismemberment, that is , tearing the person apart until dead. Nowhere in America is a death penalty imposed that burns a person to death. Abortion is an execution worse than that given to mass murderers. Yet, many convicted murderers are permitted to live. Not so with an innocent baby, who is guilty of nothing more than being alive.

THE 14TH AMENDMENT guarantees the protection of due process. No state shall make or enforce any law, which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States, nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law, nor deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. To destroy an innocent baby is a clear denial of his or her right to "due process" & to " equal protection of the laws." This includes the protection of "life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness," the core of our national and individual existence.

The Holy Eucharist will be exposed during the march for all who wish to remain in church.

George Coseo, our Grand Knight, at 724-9585. He may be able to grant a waiver of your dues. We are a charitable organization and charity begins at home.

We are continuing to gain new members, many of them young, and the future of our Council is bright. Please make the effort to attend the meetings as often as you can and enjoy the Brotherhood of which we are so proud.

Knights of Columbus Has Record Year In Insurance, Annuity Sales In 2002

 

New Haven - The Knights of Columbus posted record gains in several areas of its insurance business in 2002. The Knights ended the year with $45.6 billion of insurance in force on its members and their families. The 2001 figure was $42.9. There are currently 1.5 million life certificates in force, up from 1.4 million at year-end 2001.

"Knights of Columbus insurance program continues to grow and prosper," said Carl A. Anderson, supreme knight of the 1.6 million member Catholic fraternal benefit society. "We have long felt that our products and our fraternal agency system are among the industry's leaders, and these year-end records confirm that." The Knights of Columbus is rated AAA (Extremely Strong) by Standard and Poor's and A++ (Superior) by the A.M. Best Co.

The sale of insurance has been a part of the Knights of Columbus program since its founding in New Haven, Conn., in 1882 by Father Michael J. McGivney, a 29-year-old Catholic priest. With more than 1.6 million members throughout North America and elsewhere, the Knights is the world's largest Catholic family fraternal service organization. In 2001 members reported raising and contributing to charity a record $125 million and volunteering a record 58.9 million hours of service.

ACA News May

The Annual meeting is scheduled for first meeting in June. The purpose of this meeting will be to elect Directors for the coming year. I would like to have three council members serve as the Nominating Committee. Please see Ralph or Jim. Per the By-Laws a Directors may not succeed himself after serving a full three-year term. The 1-year or outgoing Directors are Butch Ferrizzi, Troupe Turner and Ralph Mosley. The new Directors will at their first meeting after the annual meeting elect the new officers of the ACA. Please give some thought to serving as a Director. All council members are eligible for ACA Directors and Officers.

The work party scheduled for April was cancelled because of the Ladies having their garage sale on the same day. Hope to pick a date in May.

 

ACA Silent Auction

 

The ACA has two items of interest, which I think we should auction off in order to give all members an equal opportunity to purchase. One is a set consisting of a Jaguar Brass engrave Belt Buckle, Key ring and Money clip. The other is an Inaugural Plate from Ronald Regan inauguration with signatures of Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Geo Bush and Richard Nixon. I will have these at each meeting and give all a chance to inspect and bid on the items. I would like to close the auction in June at our second meeting.

Change is: Change line one of SEC.3, OF ARTICLE VII to read as follows:

"No money in excess of $200.00 shall be paid or transferred from the Treasury of this Council, ----(the balance of the section to remain the same). “

Note this changes the wording from $100.00 to agree with previous authorizations not formally documented in the by-laws.

Perhaps you've seen the Knight in armor that is on guard in the foyer of the KC hall? He came to us unannounced so we do not know his name. And he isn't saying. So we are having a "Name the Knight" contest.

The winner will receive an appropriate award. So put on your thinking caps and come up with a worthy name for this Worthy Knight.

Footsteps for Heartbeats

 

First Coast Women's Services, which established Florida's First Coast Memorial for the Unborn, is sponsoring a walkathon to benefit this memorial. This event is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, at the Bolles School. The Knights of Columbus played a prominent role in the dedication of this memorial. Volunteer walkers and pledgers are needed to help make this event successful. Those interested in forming a council team please contact Mike Yarborough at 724-8983.

BOWLING NEWS 2003

 

The 2003 league has come to an end. By the time this issue of the newsletter reaches your hands the first and second half winners will have bowled off for the Season Championship. The results of the bowl off and the results of the annual KC state Bowling Tournament will be posted in next months bulletin. Thank you to Ralph Mosley for this year's presidential duties and to Ray and Claire Stacy for keeping up with the duties of secretary and treasury. Please join us for next years league, which will begin the first Wednesday after Labor Day.
