Dear Arlington Council Family,
Greetings. And the peace of Christ to you all. This is my first monthly
message and let me begin by saying I am honored to be Grand Knight of what I consider
the best Knights of Columbus council in Jacksonville. I am also thankful for
the excellent job PGK George Coseo did the past two years in leading our
council to a new home and achieving Star Council. Thank you George.
I am excited about the 2003-04 fraternal year. Our Program Director and
Deputy Grand Knight Steve Bell has outlined an entire year of events for us.
These events will be listed in the newsletter as well as posted on a board in
the council hall. July events include a Lone Star Road clean up on the 19th, a
council cookout on the 22nd, and a 1st degree on the 27th. Please plan to
attend some of these events.
Supreme Council initiated a new motto a few years ago, “In service to
one. In service to all”. In
keeping with this I challenge everyone in the Arlington Council family to
“stand and serve” this year. Make an effort to serve in some way our Catholic
faith, our families, our council, our parishes, and our community. Everyone
will profit from our efforts.
My fellow officers and I look forward to serving with all of you this
year. We ask for your support, your ideas, your enthusiasm, your participation,
and most of all, your prayers. Happy 4th of July and God bless you all.
Yours in Christ,
Mike

Thanks for all that you have contributed to our Council. We are so fortunate to have Brothers and Sisters like you.
Dear Brothers
and Sisters Greetings with love!
On July
4th Each Year we celebrate our freedom. The catechism defines freedom as
follows:' Freedom is the power, rooted in Reason and will, to act or not to
act, to do this or that, and so perform deliberate actions on one's own
responsibility. By free will one shape's one's own life. Human freedom is a
force for growth and maturity in truth and goodness; it attains its perfection
when directed toward God our beatitude.” When we do not associate our freedom
with God there is a grave danger that we will choose evil instead of good.
Happy 4th and enjoy the rest of the month.
Love,
Peace & prayers,
Msgr.

New Study Shows Abstinence as
Reason for Reduced Teen Pregnancy Rate:
More teens are saying no to sex outside of marriage, and that fact
is the primary reason for the drop in teen birth and pregnancy rates in recent
years according to new scientific research. The peer-reviewed study, published in April 2003 in the journal,
Adolescent and Family Health, flies in the face of previous reports attributing
the decline to increased use of contraception. The report cited abstinence as the top factor in
recent drops in the teen pregnancy rate. Overall, the study found that 100
percent of the drop in birthrates and 67 percent of the drop in pregnancy rates
could be attributed to single teens heeding the message of abstinence
education. Joanna Mohn,
M.D., the study's principal researcher, said the new study shows the factors
making the greatest contribution to the decline in overall 15-to 19-year-old
birth and pregnancy rates were an increase in abstinence and decrease in the
percentage of married teens. In
1991, the teen birthrate was 62 births per 1,000 girls. By 1995, the rate had dropped to 50
births per 1,000 girls. The
pregnancy rate per 1,000 girls dropped from 116 to 93 during the same
period. "It is time for
pro-condom advocacy groups to stop lying to the public about the real reason we
are seeing such a sharp decline in teen birth and pregnancy rates," said
Peter Brandt, Director of Issues Response for Focus on the Family. "Abstinence has always been the
only sure-fire way to prevent pregnancy and teens are proving they have
out-smarted adults on this one.
This study should be an incentive to every member of Congress to vote
for the most effective prevention program for our teens--abstinence
education." The Welfare
Reform Act of 1996, which included $50 million per year for abstinence
education, expired last year, and debate on its renewal will begin in Congress
soon.

The Name the Knight contest is closed. While we had some
thought-provoking suggestions, none were outstanding enough to perpetuate the
desired effect. Therefore, it has
been decided that the Knight will bear the name of the Grand Knight's KNIGHT OF
THE YEAR selection each year, and thus establish an inspiring and continuing
tradition in our Council.
Thanks to all who submitted a suggestion.

Softball Tournament
Arlington council #4727 is considering hosting a ROUND ROBIN Softball tournament this year around September 20th. We would need a minimum of 5 teams and someone to run the tournament. Lets talk it up and see what can be done. We are looking at Bruce Park or possibly the Dunes PAL fields. We are pretty sure we can get two teams from Miami and one from Orlando.
Contact Ralph Mosley if you have any ideas to make this work. 744-9522
