Grand Knight’s Report
By George Coseo

Brothers,

Time sure flies. Seems like I just finished writing my July message, won't be as long winded this month.

Many thanks to Butch Ferrizzi and the Brothers and K-Cee Ladies who did such a fine job in organizing and setting up the "Doc Broome Annual Benefit Ball" held on Saturday June 30th. It was a very pleasant evening with great dance music. While the attendance wasn't quite as good as we had anticipated, everyone that did attend surely enjoyed the evening.

The council website is up and running thanks to Charlie Crissman. If you haven't checked it out yet do so at http://arlingtonkofc.faithweb.com/It is quite impressive. Thanks Charlie and any other individuals who had a hand in getting this project going.Great Job!

Supreme Council has designated the week of Aug. 11-18, 2001 as the Knights of Columbus Family Week. Our families are our strength.Take time out of your busy schedules during this week and spend some quality time together, praying, talking, going to the beach or a ball game or whatever you enjoy doing together.

In this newsletter is an article called "A Lesson with Rocks and Sand".Take time to read it.How many of us need to adjust or priorities?

The installation of our council officers will be held on August 25th. Please try to attend.Details of the program can be found in an announcement in this newsletter. Please RSVP to the phone numbers in the announcement.

We look forward to seeing you there.

God's peace be with you all.

George

Chaplains Message
by Monsignor Danaher

Brothers and Sisters:

Greetings with love!

Since the beginning of the New Year the Pope has asked all people to forgive one another. He has traveled far to carry Christ's message to forgive. We pray in the Our Father to "forgive us as we forgive those who trespass against us". The Pope has taken that message in recent weeks to Greece and the Ukraine. In Kiev the Holy father said "Bowing down before our one Lord let us recognize our faults. As we ask forgiveness for the errors committed in both distant and recent past, let us in turn offer forgiveness for the wrongs endured". He further asked people to learn from our past mistakes and never repeat them.

On August 4th we celebrate the Feast of St. John

Vianney (1786-1859) the patron of parish priests. In France this Saint is also called the " The cure of Ars ".St.John Vianney spent long hours in the front of the Church's Tabernacle praying for healing and forgiveness and was credited with the resurgence of Christianity in the village of Ars. Today we use the confessional as the home of healing and forgiveness.

Love and Peace,

Msgr. Mortimer Danaher

INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE

by Jim “Bonnie” Bonitatibus

BACK TO SCHOOL

Is there anyone out there who has not noticed the absence of children on the streets during the day? No question about it, school has reopened. Never before has more emphasis been placed on school costs-and how to pay for them. Sure, the Order has a scholarship program and a student loan program and our Swift-Matthews Educational Trust Fund does answer particular needs. But most still must borrow money from banks in order to finance a college education for their sons or daughters.

Costs, of course, are up. This comes as no great surprise. In fact, while most people loudly protest increases in food prices, taxes and costs of other services, seldom do they oppose increases in the cost of education. Most parents seem to view college costs as investment. They are investing money in their children's future. It has been definitely established that college graduates earn, on the average, from 1 1/2 to two times as much as non-college grads. Perhaps this is the reason why costs are so infrequently questioned.

Wise members prepare for these expenses by planning for them in advance. I can tell you of a plan specifically designed with college in mind; it enables you to plan, in advance, for your child's college bills. It guarantees that if your child has the desire, the ambition, and the drive, he or she will also have the money. Moreover, it has a feature that no other financial institution can offer. If you die, the money you had planned to save will still be there. Call me today to discuss those needs. I want to hear from you.

ACA News

I know many of our members want to know where we are in our progress towards obtaining a new hall. In the last year the committee has looked at a number of pieces of property in the Arlington area. Many of which were more than we could afford, and still have money to build and some had questionable zoning items. We have not given up obtaining the Hartsfield Rd acreage offer by the St Augustine Diocese, which is still our best location and price. Our Attorney, Paul Harden, submitted a letter in April to the Planning Commission requesting that our application for zoning exception be place back on the agenda. It appears it was dropped pending an interpreting of the Zoning Code.Hopefully we can get this item back on the commissions agenda with a favorable ruling we can move on to the next step.

Many may not know, but the late Mrs. Alderman donated the original land for our hall. It was in Honor of Pope John XXII for whom she had great respect and admiration. I think the Knights, their work, their ideals and values have served her intention well. Is there another Mrs. Alderman out there, in this day and time, could there be?In the mean time, keep your eyes and ears open. If anyone has suggestions, property they think we should look at, connections and/or influence, we can use it all, please let us know.

A Message from the Deputy Grand Knight

by Mike Yarborough

We have been presented an opportunity by our Worthy Chaplain, Msgr. Danaher, to help the children of Jacksonville by aiding in the education of those attending the inner-city Catholic schools of St Pius V and Holy Rosary. We have been asked to pledge $2,000 a year, with a 5-year commitment toward scholarships for children unable to afford tuition but who benefit greatly from a Catholic school education.I feel that this is an outstanding and worthy cause for our council to undertake.Outlined below is my proposal to the council to achieve this worthwhile endeavor.I sincerely hope that you will consider this proposal, which would allow Council 4727 to take great pride in providing Catholic education to those less fortunate.

What:A proposal to the Council to aid the Guardian of Dreams program in assisting students of inner city Catholic Schools, St Pius V and Holy Rosary.

How: A pledge by 100 members of $20 per year for a 5 year period to raise $2000 a year and a total of $10,000 to sponsor scholarships for St Pius V and Holy Rosary schools. These 100 or more Knights would be known as the 4727 "Super 100" for their commitment to Catholic education.

Your Brother in Christ,

Mike Yarborough

Deputy Grand Knight

Right to Life - Jim Middleton

Glorious Mysteries

(1) The Resurrection: Christ is Risen! By his Resurrection, He has destroyed the power of death, and therefore the power of abortion. The outcome of the battle for Life has already been decided: Life is victorious! Let us pray that all prolifers will spread this victory to every segment of our society.

(2) The Ascension: By ascending to the Father's throne, Christ takes our human nature, given to us in the womb, to the heights of heaven. He shows us that human beings are made to be raised to heaven, not thrown in the garbage. Let us pray that the world may learn this truth and reject abortion.

(3) The Descent of the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit is the Advocate: He pleads our cause, for we cannot save ourselves. We pray that He will make us advocates for the babies, who cannot speak or write or vote or protest or even pray.

(4) The Assumption: The Blessed Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heaven because she is the Mother of God. Mother and child are united. The Assumption reminds us that they belong together. We pray that society will see that it cannot love women while killing their children, and cannot save children without helping their mothers. We pray that people will be touched by the pro-life question, "Why can't we love them both?"

(5) The Coronation: Mary is the Queen of the Universe. The Church teaches that she is the greatest creature, second only to God Himself. The Church defends the dignity of women. We pray that people will understand that to be pro-life means to be pro-woman, and that to be pro-woman demands that we be pro-life.

A LESSON WITH ROCKS AND SAND

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2" in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of small pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

Then the professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor, "I want you to recognize that this is your life.

The rocks are the important things - your God, your family, your partner, your health, your children, and your country - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.

The sand is everything else. The small stuff."

"If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all of your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you."

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Pray. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out dancing. Vote. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal."

"Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand".
