Dear
Arlington Council Family,
The peace
of Christ to you all. The summer is rolling right along and school will be starting
in just a few weeks. August will be a very busy month for the council. By the
time you receive this newsletter we will have had 1st Friday mass on August
1st, and the Installation of Officers Dinner on August 2nd. Other upcoming
events will be our regular business meeting on the 12th, Lone Star Road
clean-up on the 16th, Game Night on the 26th, and preparing sandwiches for the
Soup Kitchen on the 29th. Please try to make one or more of these events. You
will find the experience enjoyable.
WOW! That
was my reaction to the response and attendance at our Council Cookout on July
22nd. The hall was packed, the burgers, dogs, and side dishes were delicious,
and the fellowship was inspiring. A big thanks to Steve Bell and all who helped
with the food preparation and thanks to all who attended this great event.
365 days in a year, 24 hours in a
day, 60 minutes in an hour, Down to the second. Time has become our most
precious commodity. How to best use it is a question we are constantly asking
ourselves. Using it for the betterment and enjoyment of our families is
probably time's greatest use. Where do the Knights of Columbus fit into our
busy schedules? Only you can determine that. Know that the council appreciates
any time you put into our organization. Attend a meeting, come to an event, or
serve with the council in other ways and your time will have been well spent.
Yours in
Christ,
Mike

Thanks for all that you have contributed to our Council. We are so fortunate to have Brothers and Sisters like you.
Dear
Brothers and Sisters Greetings with love!
One of
the Motors in our daily lives is the virtue of hope. Today so many of our
people seem to forget that we have this virtue (power).
Some years ago a very bright
Cardinal Leo Jozef Suenens wrote this about hope” I have hope because I believe
that God is born a new each morning, because I believe that God is creating the
world at this very moment in time. We must be ready to expect the unexpected
from God. I believe the Holy Spirit is at work in the Church and in the World,
even when the name of God is unheard. To hope is a duty not a luxury. To hope
is not a dream, but to turn dreams into reality”
Lord,
increase our Hope.
Love,
Peace & prayers,
Msgr.

Respect Life deserves more than lip
service
Bishop
Anthony J. O'Connell-Bishop of Palm Beach
Can
you believe that there are some people - even some Catholics - who cringe when
they hear the words Respect Life? How could that be? For us Catholics, there is no question that this includes
all life, and most especially all human life from its first moment of existence
to the moment of natural death. We acknowledge that God is the author of life
and is the only one who has total dominion over it. This means for us that we
have the utmost respect for the life of the unborn in the womb and that we do
all we can to promote that respect. It means that we respect the life of the
physically or mentally disabled, the aged, the terminally ill, those in prison
- including those on death row. Nobody has done more to nudge us Catholics into
adopting this consistent ethic of life than Our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II
himself. He really has left us with no wiggle space. We just cannot afford to
pick and choose. ALL life is sacred, sacred to God, and we are not God. Not all
Catholics are supportive of the Holy Father's teaching - some differ with him
on abortion, others on the imposition of the death penalty. But they are wrong.
Life at all stages is sacred. There are helpful theological principles to guide
us in the care of the sick, principles which govern the kinds of means to be
used or which need not necessarily be used particularly in the case of the
terminally ill. Even in these situations, we approach such questions with
utmost respect for human life. Most dioceses have a diocesan coordinator of
Respect Life ministry, which we do have. The prime responsibility of such an
office is to see to it that there is a Respect Life ministry in every parish.
This does not call for a huge or expensive bureaucracy, but it does mean that
there will be a small group of people in every parish who will keep this
Respect Life ministry before every parish organization. This is where the most
successful action occurs. Some ask for mention to be made in homilies from time
to time during the year. I agree that there are many occasions when the Sunday
readings do permit an application to this particular cause - and that can be
helpful. But we need to do more than pay lip service to this cause from the
pulpit or engage in some activity around the anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the
U. S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand.
BACK
TO SCHOOL
Is
there anyone out there who has not noticed the absence of children on the
streets during the day? No question about it, school has reopened. Never before
has more emphasis been placed on school costs-and how to pay for them. Sure,
the Order has a scholarship program and a student loan program and our
Swift-Matthews Educational Trust Fund does answer particular needs. But most
still must borrow money from banks in order to finance a college education for
their sons or daughters.
Costs,
of course, are up. This comes as no great surprise. In fact, while most people
loudly protest increases in food prices, taxes and costs of other services,
seldom do they oppose increases in the cost of education. Most parents seem to
view college costs as investment. They are investing money in their children's
future. It has been definitely established that college graduates earn, on the
average, from 1 ½ to two times as much as non-college grads. Perhaps this is
the reason why costs are so infrequently questioned.
Wise members prepare for these
expenses by planning for them in advance. I can tell you of a plan specifically
designed with college in mind; it enables you to plan, in advance, for your
child's college bills. It guarantees that if your child has the desire, the
ambition, and the drive, he or she will also have the money. Moreover, it has a
feature that no other financial institution can offer. If you die, the money
you had planned to save will still be there. Call me today to discuss those
needs. I want to hear from you.

Our KC Membership Tea and Installation
of Officers will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2003, from 2:00-4:00 P.M., at
the Knights of Columbus #4727 council Hall. We welcome all catholic women
so bring a friend and help make this a successful event.
God Bless,
Laura
My two years are up and I feel I accomplished what I set out to do, have
a hall for 4727. Of course none of
this would have been possible without the directors and offices of the
ACA. I thank the many that gave of
their time to bring the hall to where it is today. There are still many items
to complete, offer your help and make your suggestions known. Your new offices
of the ACA for the year 2003-2004 are as follows: Jim Middleton, Pres.; Mike
Capizzi, Vice-Pres.; Tom Guggisberg, Sect; Troupe Turner, Treas. Check out the “Shuffleboard” in
the “activity room”, thanks to Jim Middleton's son-in-law in Atlanta. The PA
system is almost complete, the speakers were donated by Harry and Doris Bowen,
the K-Cees provided the $$ for the other parts, they also purchase five more
tables. Thanks to all.
We have several events coming up in August. See the Calendar. For those
who missed the announcement there is no longer a second regular meeting during
the month. Our normal business meeting will be conducted the second Tuesday of
the month. The fourth Tuesday of the month will be reserved for "FUN
STUFF".
